Differences between UVA-340 and UVB-313 light tubes

1. Wavelength and spectrum (Key difference)
 
UVA-340: 295–365 nm
Perfectly matches the UV spectrum of sunlight at the Earth's surface, contains virtually no short-wave UV that does not exist in the natural environment, resulting in aging effects that closely mirror real-world outdoor exposure.

UVB-313: 280–315 nm
Contains significant amounts of short-wave UV rarely found in nature; possesses extremely high photon energy. It accelerates aging 2–3 times faster than UVA-340 and is prone to producing artifacts of excessive aging (e.g., cracking and chalking that are far more severe than what occurs outdoors).
 
2. Differences in aging characteristics
UVA-340:

Aging characteristics: fading, loss of gloss, slight micro-cracking, and reduced adhesion—consistent with outdoor weathering.
Test duration: medium-to-long cycle, simulating real-world outdoor durability.
Humidity compatibility: compatible with 60–90% RH, light and condensation cycling, recommended by the GB/T 16422.3 national standard.

UVB-313:

Aging characteristics: rapid chalking, severe cracking, and excessive surface degradation, prone to non-representative failure modes.
Test duration: short-cycle rapid screening, intended solely for comparative R&D purposes.
Humidity conditions: accelerated lamp aging under high humidity, use requires mutual agreement between the supplier and the client.

3. Applicable Materials and Standard Scenarios
 
UVA-340 (Preferred choice for standard mass production, exports, and third-party testing)
 
Applications: outdoor coatings, plastics, rubber, automotive exterior parts, door and window profiles, photovoltaics, outdoor building materials;
Standards: standard recommended lamp for GB/T 16422.3, ASTM G154, and ISO 4892-3;
Uses: product compliance weathering tests, outdoor service life assessment, and pre-shipment inspection.
 
UVB-313 (For R&D screening and extreme comparative testing only, not for final acceptance testing)
 
Applications: rapid comparison of raw material formulations, additive screening, and exploratory testing of extreme weathering limits;
Not recommended for: issuing formal test reports, customer acceptance, or long-term durability assessment;
Limitations: Reports must specify the use of UVB lamps; otherwise, the data lacks reference value for outdoor performance.
 
4. Service life and operating costs
 
UVA: long service life, low replacement frequency, stable spectrum; lower overall cost for long-term testing;
UVB: short service life, frequent replacement; suitable only for short-term, rapid exploratory testing.
